How to Wash Bedding, Pillows, and Comforters Correctly

Keeping your bedding clean isn’t just about fresh sheets — it’s essential for hygiene, sleep quality, and even allergy control. But washing bulky items like pillows and comforters can be tricky. Here's how to do it right without damaging your bedding or your washing machine.

1. Washing Sheets and Pillowcases

Sheets and pillowcases should be washed once a week in hot water to kill bacteria and dust mites. Use a gentle detergent and avoid fabric softeners, which can reduce absorbency and trap body oils.

  • Tip: Wash sheets separately to prevent them from tangling with clothes or stretching out.

2. How to Wash Pillows

Most synthetic and down pillows are machine washable. Check the care label first. Wash two pillows at a time to balance the load, using warm water on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent.

  • Drying: Use low heat and toss in a couple of clean tennis balls or dryer balls to help fluff them up. Make sure pillows are completely dry to prevent mildew.

3. Washing Comforters and Duvets

Comforters can be more delicate, especially down-filled ones. Most can be machine washed but check the label first. Use a large-capacity washer if possible — comforters need room to move.

  • Cycle: Wash in cold or warm water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. Avoid bleach or fabric softeners.

  • Drying: Dry on low heat with dryer balls or tennis balls. Be patient — drying a comforter can take several hours. Make sure it's fully dry to avoid clumping or mildew.

Extra Tips

  • Spot treat stains before washing.

  • Use a duvet cover to protect your comforter and make frequent washing easier.

  • Consider a mattress protector to reduce how often you need to deep-clean bedding items.

With proper care, your bedding will stay fresh, fluffy, and last much longer. A cleaner bed can also mean better sleep — and who doesn’t want that?
